Honey Young, pictured above, is the great grand-dog of Elizabeth Jenkins Young. Liz Young was born in Brick House in 1919. She was one of eight siblings, and a pre-eminent preservationist in Charleston. With the support of the Brick House Trust, her grand-son, architect Simons Young, has been leading the efforts to stabilize this threatened structure.
SPA does it again ! In a no bid deal cooked up between the SPA and Lowe’s , which is building a 345 room hotel on the old SPA office property, the SPA will payLowes $50,000 plus per month for 30-36 months to entitle and plan the development of the non maritime part of Union Pier. Way too much to spend $850,000 for shore power for cruise ships. And spend Lord knows how much to fight the community’s concerns about adverse impacts from the cruise ships on the nationally important adjacent neighborhoods. But $1.5-1.8 M for a development plan !
Our political and community leaders need to reign the SPA in and make it listen to our concerns before it’s too late
Talk about arrogance! State Senator Sandy Senn and Mayor Techlenberg asked Carnival to screen the 2441 passengers and 1000 crew when the Carnival Sunshine docked in Charleston today- where she and her crew will remain for at least 30 days. After being assured of the testing, Carnival gets in touch with THE CDC and SCDHEC who decide that simply asking the passengers if the felt sick on disembarkation was a good enough “test”. A passenger - a pharmacy student at the U of South Carolina- hit the nail on the head when he said:”....regardless of how you are feeling, with a pandemic at hand and an all - too-recent quarantined ship, anyone would respond that they felt fine”. What an impact lack of screening or testing might have on us all , especially us “vulnerables”. Carnival is totally insensitive to Charleston and this is just the most recent example 👹👹
1970’s. Elizabeth Jenkins Young explaining why Brick House ruins should be saved. 50 years later - Mission almost accomplished ✅
Moby ‘s crew is doing very professional work to finish the Preservation Project at Brick House. Taking out the rusted iron jack arch supports, putting in stainless steel supports and pointing the bricks. About half done and looking fantastic. BH Ruins to be on EIHS tour October 26.
Been awhile between reports. Jack arches and chimneys being repointed, which will finish Phase 2 of the Brick House Stabilization project . A National treasure being preserved for future generations .
Map drawn by Gus Stoney on how to find Brick House from Sewanee- University of the South. Thanks to my great friend Caroline @cariboo24
Thanks to tons of supporters, and 4SE, SimonsYoung&Associates and Richard (Moby) Marks Restoration , we have made great progress at Brick House in 2018. Moby is now going to try to stabilize the jack arches and repoint the worst places, but it’s fair to say the South wall and one chimney are no longer in danger of crashing down and most of the hard work should be completed by the Spring. THANKS. J Rutledge Young ,Jr. President of Brick House Ruins Stabilization , Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization .
Old plat of Brick House. I think the road on the bottom as you look at plat is the original road to Brick House - before the avenue of oaks was planted.
Rare picture taken in Oct 1929 , right after the fire .
Loose bricks taken down. Replacement and repointing starting this week⛏⛏
